I guess that just depends on the situation, I have found the book Boundaries to be very helpful in dealing with difficult family members. Also, having a plan beforehand is good, and also keeping topics light. If something controversial gets brought up I usually try to remind others that we all have differing opinions, but it’s Thanksgiving or Christmas, let’s agree to disagree and enjoy what we do have in common. Oh, and especially for a certain member of our family that baits people, I ignore him. He’s definitely lost his steam over the years
Remembering that we are each on our own journey through life. And acknowledging the struggles as well as someone’s history can cause them to view the world differently than I might.
Boundaries! And knowing how many hours I can handle with different extended family members. I love our little family, so I'm hoping when my children are grown we won't have difficult family dynamics. We'll see in 20 years how it works out and what sons-in-law my husband and I get!
