My child knows what work is expected for the day and has the leeway to do it however she sees fit and we are pretty flexible with time. Some days we start early, but most days we start late and end later (since we're night owls). We homeschool year round so we don't spend all day on "regular" work and we like to travel quite a bit.
Yes, to an extent. When each child has their different energy levels at different times of day, it is usually best to let them pick. Sometimes, I'll call them downstairs to get school down, only to discover they were already doing their lessons up in their room (a good reason to not jump the gun in thinking someone's avoiding work. lol) You just have to follow up and make sure things are progressing.
My kids can explore and learn whatever they have interest in but after they do their “regular” school work.
