Since I don't love all subjects, I recognize they probably won't either. When it seems like something is starting to feel like a slog, I try to gamify it or find some hands-on, real life application, change the setting, or add physical movement (let's review math facts or parts of speech & jumping jacks!).
That would be Math. We incorporate some of his favorite animals, stories and toys into his work. We use pictures of things he likes and often use hot wheels cars and trucks in his counting groups. This has really helped a lot.
We explain why the subject is important, either in "real" life, or in building a foundation for their college education. We also point out how any learning exercises our brain and makes future learning in any subject easier.
