Pets can help a lot with teaching responsibility, my oldest has a beta fish, a rabbit, and a cat that she is responsible for taking care of. We also have 2 australian shepherds and my children love playing with them and teaching/practicing commands with them! They get exercise by playing with them too!
My nerves were immediately effected when I read this question. lol Soooo I'm going to go with 'hinder'. When you have a large family, dogs can be a nuisance. But every family is different, and I certainly would not discourage anyone from having a pet.
We have three dogs and a puppy. The older dogs help so much with homeschooling my daughters because one focuses their energy so much better while having sensory stimulation. Our oldest dog will lay or sit beside her to be pet while she reads on the laptop or watches video curriculum. It helps her not fidget and tinker so that she can retain the information. My other daughter is adopted and has anxiety, bouts of depression and a traumatic past. The dogs help her to never be alone, as well as give her constant purpose and a neverending flow of love. When she needs a break fr it'll m schoolwork from being overwhelmed she can take a quick 5 to play with the puppy or walk a dog to expel some physical energy and reset her mindset to not get "trapped" in her own head.
